The winner, Mohammed Khatami, was supported by millions of Iranians who oppose the controls on private and public life imposed by the Government. Instead, the French voted heavily for the leftist opposition and protest parties, raising the chances that the Socialists could lead a majority in Parliament after runoff elections next Sunday. 1 A Stunning Result in Iran Near-final results announced after Iran's presidential election showed the dimensions of the upset victory by a moderate cleric, Mohammed Khatami, who won a surprising 69 percent of the vote.
