INTERNATIONAL 3-13 Social Moderate Wins Upset Election in Iran In a surprising upset, Iranians elected as president a candidate who campaigned on a platform of tolerance and social reform. The winner, Mohammed Khatami, was supported by millions of Iranians who oppose the controls on private and public life imposed by the Government. Although the President's power is limited, the election marks the first time since the revolution of 1979 that a figure associated with moderation has won a broad public mandate. 1 Mr. Khatami may be soft-spoken and worldly, but it was his black turban that cemented his victory, by resolving any voter doubts that he was not sufficiently orthodox. 10

Instead, the French voted heavily for the leftist opposition and protest parties, raising the chances that the Socialists could lead a majority in Parliament after runoff elections next Sunday. 1 A Stunning Result in Iran Near-final results announced after Iran's presidential election showed the dimensions of the upset victory by a moderate cleric, Mohammed Khatami, who won a surprising 69 percent of the vote. Ali Akbar Nategh-Nouri, his principal opponent, took just 25 percent. Never in 18 years of Islamic rule had Iranians so clearly rejected the will of the ruling Shiite Muslim clerics. 1

The bride, 30, who will be known as Mrs. Lindquist-Turner, graduated from New York University. She is a daughter of Marlene J. Herr of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Therold S. L. Lindquist of Fredonia, N.Y., where the bride's father is a professor of photography at the State University College.
