INTERNATIONAL A3-9 Gingrich Issues Warning To Chinese Over Taiwan Newt Gingrich, the Speaker of the House, said he had warned China's top leaders that the United States would intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked. The issue is so sensitive that diplomats have tiptoed around it for years, but at the end of a three-day trip to China, Mr. Gingrich said he had bluntly stated how the United States would respond.
