18th of February 1981 News

News as it appeared on the front page of the New York Times on February 18, 1981

Q. We live in a 70-year-old Cape Cod and the rooms on the second floor have sloping sides. The central portion of the ceiling is flat, so there is a space above this, between this narrow ceiling and the peak. There is no access to this space under the peak, and no sign of vents for that space. We have been told that there is probably insulation directly under the roof and we should therefore not vent that space unless we put insulation down on the ceiling. In order to do so we would have to cut an access door in the ceiling. Also, the second floor rooms get very hot in the summer. What do you suggest? - M.G., Washington.
