EL DIARIO MOVING ITS PRINTING UNIT; Union Reports Daily Plans to Subcontract in Jersey

Officials of newspaper craft union in NYC rept on March 27 that they have been notified that El Diario-La Prensa will end its printing operation in NYC after March 30; union sources rept that paper plans to subcontract printing to plant in Morristown, NJ, and transport paper into NYC for distribution among Spanish-speaking population; rept that 108 news and business employes represented by TNG will not be affected by move in printing operations and that they will continue to work in NYC; paper's publisher O R Chalk is not available for comment

Ellsberg Defense Begins Effort To Disprove Charges of Theft; Earlier Testimony

L J Henderson Jr, retired vp and founder of Rand Corp, testifies on March 27 at Pentagon papers trial that defendant D Ellsberg had no right to show papers to anyone; Judge W M Byrne orders remark stricken from record; says that when he recd papers in Rand's Washington office early in '69 he did not enter them in 'top secret' control system and did not log them into Rand, nor did he assign them special 'top secret' control number, as is standard Rand procedure; says he believed he should protect documents more carefully that normal documents recd by corp; says he acted the way he did because he had approval of then Sec of Defense P C Warnke; says he believed that after Warnke left Govt service, Warnke no longer had access to Pentagon papers; says he twice signed courier passes to allow Ellsberg to transport volumes of papers from Rand in Washington to Rand in Santa Monica because Ellsberg had security clearance and had 'a need to know'; says Ellsberg had gotten access to papers only because he was working on 'project' and that he never had been given permission to copy papers or show them to anyone, including codefendant A J Russo Jr

NY Times, NY Daily News and NY Post and newspaper unions have initiated heavy schedule of bargaining talks in coming 48 hrs, but neither side appears to be expecting any strike action when current contracts expire at midnight on March 30; Newspaper Deliverers Union is only 1 among 9 newspaper unions still without agreements whose membership has authorized strike; negotations are scheduled on March 30 between publishers and Typographical Union Local 6 and Paperhandlers Union Local 1; members of Mailers Union Local 6 are scheduled to vote on ratification of tentative pact at 3 PM on April 1 at TNG hq; TNG exec vp J E Deegan says that he has no significant progress to rept in his union's negotiations

Mil police detain on Mar 28 D Tsatsos, prof in Bonn Univ in W Ger, and V Tsouderos, daughter of late Premier E Tsouderos, at special interrogation branch of mil police in latest wave of security arrests in Athens; relatives say they are known to be held incommunicado and that no reason was given for arrests; note their apts were searched and documents were confiscated; young Swiss student who called on Tsouderos to deliver lr during search is reptd to have also been taken to hq; arrests bring to at least 8 those known to be held incommunicado at special branch; Athens lawyers C Alavanos, A Vgontzas, D Papas, N Karamanlis, P Kanellakis and D Bouloukos have been held since their arrest between Feb 26 and Mar 4 and no lawyers or relatives have been allowed to see them; Alavanos, Vgontzas, Papas and Karamanlis were arrested shortly after serving as defense attys for 11 student demonstrators; Amnesty Internatl charges on Mar 27 that it has received message smuggled out by 6 lawyers which amts to 'cry of help from people tortured in the most unbearable manner'; civilian security police also arrest P Gavalas, lawyer and writer; A Coerant, Dutch radio-TV correspondent who was ordered out of Greece by security authorities on ground that he had incited violence among students, leaves Athens for Amsterdam by air; says he was beaten by police; leaves behind his wife and son
