Rúben Semedo

Rúben Afonso Borges Semedo (born 4 April 1994) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a central defender for Qatari Second Division club Al-Markhiya.

Developed at Sporting CP, he went to on to serve two loans then make 48 competitive appearances for its first team. In 2017 he signed with Villarreal and, after two years and as many loans, joined Olympiacos where he won several titles, including two Super League Greece championships.

Semedo made his full debut for Portugal in 2020. His career has been marred by legal problems off the field.

Pat Harper, who was among the first women to become a television news anchor, died on Saturday in her home in Capileira, Spain. She was 59. The cause was a heart attack, said Karen Scott, an executive producer at WPIX in New York City, and a longtime friend.

A CD-ROM Magazine Is a Sound Possibility

MANY personal computers come equipped with CD-ROM drives and sound cards, and almost all can be fitted with them afterward. They open up many possibilities. More and more frequently, high-end software is supplied on disks instead of on a dozen or more floppies; games on CD's offer video sequences, and the devices can even play audio CD's with the proper software. The Macintosh here is running "Gershwin Plays Gershwin," a nice anachronism: piano-roll reproductions tinkling out of a double-speed AppleCD 300 reader and a pair of speakers. The software is also Apple's: CD Remote, which puts the image of a remote-control unit on the screen.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES OFFERING LOWER FARES TO EUROPE

Continental Airlines began offering lower spring and summer fares yesterday on flights to Europe that do not carry typical restrictions like minimum stays or round-trip purchases. The fares are 10 percent to 20 percent below restricted spring and summer sales from most United States cities, Continental said. Tickets must be purchased by April 21. The new fares are available from most United States cities that Continental serves to its five European destinations: Frankfurt, Munich, London, Madrid and Paris. Spring fares for one-way travel range from $249 to $449, while summer one-way fares range from $299 weekday and $319 weekend to $569 weekday and $589 on weekends.

SYMANTEC TO BUY CENTRAL POINT SOFTWARE IN STOCK DEAL

The Symantec Corporation said it planned to buy Central Point Software Inc. in a stock transaction worth about $60 million. Symantec, based in Cupertino, Calif., is the publisher of Norton Utilities software. The company will exchange about four million shares for Central Point, which is based in Beaverton, Ore. The combined expertise of the companies will help them develop diagnostic software for computers in large corporate networks, the companies said. Symantec's stock rose 37.5 cents yesterday, to $16, in Nasdaq trading.

MAGAININ SHARES PLUNGE AFTER DRUG TEST FAILS

The stock of Magainin Pharmaceuticals Inc. plunged 59 percent after the company said its lead drug had failed in a test. Magainin, which develops drugs based on compounds from animal immune systems, said yesterday that an ointment known as MSI-78 had failed to outperform a placebo in a trial on children who had impetigo, a skin infection. Magainin shares fell $7.875, to $5.375, in Nasdaq trading. Magainin went public in 1991 amid expectations that MSI-78, which is based on a peptide in frogs that disinfects their skin, would create a popular line of animal-based drugs.

Astrum Deal in Russia

The Astrum International Corporation's Samsonite and American Tourister units have signed an agreement with Dokofa, a leather-goods company, to make and distribute luggage from its factory in Tula, Russia. Steven Green, Astrum's chief executive, said last week that the "multimillion-dollar investment" would involve refitting the plant with equipment and machinery and providing the luggage molds and design.

Principa l/Eppler, Guerin & Turner Inc., a Dallas regional brokerage, said today that it had changed its name to Principal Financial Securities Inc., effective April 1. The unit of Principal Financial Group was founded in 1952 and has more than $49 million in equity capital. Principal/Eppler, with 40 branch offices in 10 states throughout the Southwest and Midwest, became a Principal subsidiary in 1986. Principal Financial Group, Des Moines, is a diversified holding company with interests in insurance and financial services with almost $44 billion in assets under management.

California Bank Fails

The Mechanics National Bank of Paramount, Calif., became the nation's first bank failure of 1994, the Government said last week. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency closed the bank, which had assets of about $165.8 million and eight offices. The bank had incurred losses of more than $21 million in two years, which depleted its capital, the office and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said on Friday. Home Bank of Signal Hill, Calif., has assumed the insured deposits of the failed bank, the regulators said.

Soros in a Satellite TV Deal

The financier George Soros and several affiliated funds and fund managers have made a "substantial" investment in U.S. Satellite Broadcasting, its parent, Hubbard Broadcasting, said last week. U.S. Satellite said on Friday it would begin offering entertainment and information programming in May to households with an 18-inch satellite dish and digital home receiver. It declined to disclose the amount invested.
