'The Press Was Here,' But Not The Enemy

If there was a television moment that captured the spirit of the showdown in Haiti, it may have been one yesterday morning just after the first troops touched down at the airport in Port-au-Prince. They had arrived on 10 helicopters, a menacing phalanx in the sky reminiscent of "Apocalypse Now," and they hit the ground ready for combat: belly-down on the tarmac, rifles aimed in all directions. And then, within a few minutes, a soldier identified as Sgt. Damon Arnett was being asked on live television the quintessential post-game question: How did it feel out there?

Henry Ford 2d was a blunt man. But on the subject of the decision that caused the greatest uproar during his last years running the Ford Motor Company -- his dismissal of Lee A. Iacocca in 1978 -- Mr. Ford mostly stayed mum. By contrast, Mr. Iacocca, who went on to success leading the Chrysler Corporation, in remarks to reporters and in a best-selling autobiography accused Mr. Ford of being everything from a "spoiled brat" to a racist to a drunk.

PEOPLE like to complain about their newspapers. But they rarely get the chance that San Francisco residents will have this Election Day to actually vote on them. A proposition on the Nov. 8 ballot in San Francisco amounts to a newspaper popularity contest. The contestants are one of the city's two big dailies, The San Francisco Examiner, and a three-day-a-week free community newspaper, The San Francisco Independent.

ANDREA ELECTRONICS SHARES SOAR ON BELLSOUTH PACT

Date: 20 September 1994

By Bloomberg News

Bloomberg News

The stock of the Andrea Electronics Corporation soared 67 percent yesterday after the BellSouth Corporation said it would use Andrea's noise-reduction technology in its phones. Stock of Andrea, a Long Island telecommunications equipment manufacturer, rose $7.875, to $19.625 on the American Stock Exchange. PECO ENERGY SAYS 2,500 EMPLOYEES RETIRED EARLY

The Peco Energy Company said yesterday that about 2,500 of its employees had opted for early retirement, exceeding the utility's goal of cutting 1,000 jobs this year. Peco said the cuts would result in a one-time charge to 1994 earnings and that the amount of the charge would be announced next week. In April, Peco, formerly the Philadelphia Electric Company, offered early retirement and separation packages to its 9,300 employees. At the time, the utility said the cuts could result in "a significant one-time charge." The cuts are the latest in a six-year effort to cut costs at Peco. Since 1986, the utility has reduced the number of employees from 11,300.
