Il est considéré, avec Franz Beckenbauer, Paolo Maldini et Franco Baresi comme l'un des meilleurs défenseurs centraux de l'histoire du football.

Malgré un modeste palmarès avec West Ham United, club auquel il reste fidèle pendant la majeure partie de sa carrière, malgré un départ en prêt au Real Madrid pendant 2 ans, Moore est considéré comme l'un des plus grands footballeurs britanniques. Il compte 108 sélections en équipe d'Angleterre entre 1961 et 1973, dont il est le capitaine lors de la victoire en Coupe du monde en 1966.
